HP support applications 'have multiple vulnerabilities'

A problem associated with Hewlett Packard (HP) customer support applications has resulted in a number of internet security vulnerabilities, it has been reported.

The Register states that the pre-installed application is intended to help consumers keep their machine's drivers up to date.

However, vulnerabilities in the ActiveX aspects of the support service are putting such users at increased risk of so-called "drive-by" attacks from hackers uploading malware on to the system.

Specifically, should internet users be browsing and come across websites where online threats are lurking, malware left by hackers with malicious intent could infect their computer.

In April, the Register reported on a warning released by HP Australia which stated that its optional USB keys delivered with its Proliant servers could be infected with worms.

It was unclear how many of the USB keys had been shipped but the news was taken as evidence of the growing use of such items to spread malware on to users' systems.
