How to tackle in-session phishing
Internet users should be warned but not alarmed about the so-called in-session phishing, which has gained recent media attention due to its innovative style of compromising one's internet security.
This new method involves cyber crooks intercepting web sessions on safe and trusted websites in order to steal sensitive banking details while the user is still logged on.
Writing in Ovum, online security insider Graham Titterington states that due to this development, "conventional warnings about ignoring unsolicited emails are irrelevant".
Instead he suggests that organisations should update their warnings to inform users to be wary of unexpected pop-up windows, even when they appear to be relevant to what they are doing.
However, he goes on to say that "as phishing gets ever more ingenious we are approaching a state where we tell users to ignore anything that appears to be unfamiliar".
"It is going to be hard to instill this level of suspicion without destroying confidence in online processes," he adds and concludes that the best way out is for the industry to boost its internet security defences.
