Hacking network 'could attract wrong crowd'

Hackers have created a social networking site through which to promote collaboration in testing the limits of security systems.

Backed by "ethical hacking group" GnuCitizen, House of Hackers already has in excess of 1,000 members, in news that may be of concern to those looking to update their anti-virus software.

Organisers of the site say that it is intended to help security researchers share information and that "hacker" is used in a complimentary sense, to mean one skilled in testing the limits of online security, PCAdvisor.co.uk reports.

Petko D Petkov, founder of GnuCitizen, states: "We do not promote criminal activities. The network is designed to enable its members to exchange ideas with each other, communicate [and] form groups ... conglomerate around projects and participate in a hacker recruitment market."

However, those concerned about malware, trojans and other forms of online threats designed to maliciously attack security walls may be concerned by the creation of the group.

Speaking to Dark Reading, industry commentator HD Moore suggested that the recruitment aspect of the site could attract those with malicious intent, with employers unconcerned with the legality of their tasks seeking out experts in cracking internet security systems.
