Gloucestershire man rues lax security
One UK internet user has spoken of his distress after falling victim to the online threat posed by hackers.
John Gardner of Prestwich said that he was "shocked and horrified" to discover that hackers had gained access to his details and used his funds to pay for groceries, cinema tickets and mobile phone top-ups among other purchases.
The accountant's case could serve as a warning to those not taking heed of the need to protect themselves with anti-virus and anti-spyware software against all manner of internet threats, including malware infecting home machines.
"It is a violation of my privacy and had I not reacted the way I did it could have been much worse for me," Mr Gardner states.
Having established that his security had been compromised he spoke with the police, his bank and Royal Mail - who had alerted him to a problem by writing to him informing him that his mail was being redirected.
Meanwhile, the Register has reported on recent figures published by Ofcom that suggest Britons are becoming increasingly fearful of ID fraud as awareness of the problem builds.
