Gadgets 'can contain malware'

PC users in America have been warned that it is not just online threats they have to be wary of as malware infections can be delivered via a gadget such as an mp3 player or smart pen.

Bill Husted, writing for online news resource the Atlanta Journal, made his comments after a batch of digital photo frames was discovered to contain malware before the units had even reached their owners.

He acknowledged that most such infections are accidental "for instance, a worker might use a music player for his own use, connecting it to an infected computer".

"But there's also evidence that some of these programs are added on purpose," Mr Husted warned.

He urged users to ensure their anti-virus software is kept up to date in order to minimise the malware threat to their PCs.

The infected photo frames were released to consumers by Best Buy, which quickly urged consumers not to plug them into their computers.
