Full disk encryption should be mandatory

Organisations that hold personally identifiable data should be legally obligated to have full disk encryption, a leading supplier of data security solutions to the UK has said.

According to BeCrypt, whose client base includes the UK public sector, the Ministry of Defence, police forces and corporate markets, "there is absolutely no excuse for the recent round of serious data breaches".

The organisation's chief technology officer Marc Hocking says data breaches occasioned by human error can be a thing of the past with the correct data encryption technology.

"Encryption technology is now available that is easy to roll out to all computers and data storage devices within an organisation, it can be centrally managed and it is transparent to the end user, so it does not affect their ability to do their job," he said.

"There is really no excuse not to protect people's personal information more thoroughly."

His calls come in the wake of recent data breaches including the loss of an unencrypted portable hard drive containing the details of thousands of prisoners.
