First-ever bogus anti-spyware solution for Macs is discovered
The first free trial anti-spyware solution to be released for Macs is a rogue product that will not help keep computers clear of viruses, it has been claimed.
The Macsweeper product, which was identified by F-Secure, is the first of its kind for Macs, but this kind of scam is well known to users of PCs.
Computer users running the application in a free trial will find that it appears to uncover a host of spyware and security problems.
A message then indicates that the only way to remove the problems is to invest in the full version of the application.
However, in fact many of the so-called problems are actually non-existent, heise-security.co.uk reports.
News of the rogue anti-spyware application comes as Mac owners are increasingly becoming the target of attacks.
These include a raft of Trojans which attempt to acquire banking and online auction site information which have been in evidence since the later stages of last year.
