Firms' neglect leads to data breaches, expert says
Internet security breaches such as the one that recently left employees of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at risk of exposure to ID theft occur due to negligence from companies, it has been argued.
According to Brian Ahern, the president and CEO of Industrial Defender, a US risk protection provider, cyber crooks are able to get into such networks because the victims are not monitoring their systems.
FAA issued a statement warning of the breach when it discovered that a computer server that contained 48 files, two of which contained employee data, had been illegally accessed by an outsider.
This breach has prompted US president Barack Obama to set up a 60-day review to look into the online security measures in place to prevent hacking into federal computer systems.
Reacting to this news, Mr Ahern is quoted by Info Security as saying: "In today's world, implementing a sound cyber security strategy is absolutely vital toward protecting our nations resources and ultimately, ensuring citizen safety."
