File sharing websites full of online threats, expert warns
Websites that encompass user generated content have been fingered as a treasure trove of internet security threats such as viruses and malware, which internet users should be aware of.
According to online security firm Commtouch, websites that feature streaming media and downloads are among the top ten platforms infected with malware and also manipulated by phishing.
Amir Lev, the chief technology officer of Commtouch, says spammers and malicious script writers "are finding new ways to engage users", thanks to development of file sharing platforms.
"An increasing number of blended threats have emerged as new opportunities to infect users' machines have arisen," he said.
"These kinds of sites have become targets for new, more elaborative schemes, and users, vendors and service providers must beware and employ protection measures."
According to the firm's fourth quarter 2008 Internet Threats Trend Report, over 300,000 computers were turned into zombies with Brazil leading in this internet security platform.
