FBI warns of phishing threat
US citizens have been warned of a phishing email which purports to be a court subpoena.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI's) Crime Complaint Centre has explained that at first glance, the scam email looks very authentic.
It contains a court case number, the name and address of a federal court and even the names of the issuing officers, the department stated.
Furthermore, it threatens that a lack of response could lead to further charges, the government body continued.
Commenting on the phishing scam, James E Finch, assistant director of the FBI's cyber division, said the web is "rampant" with scams of this nature and urged recipients to delete unsolicited emails.
"If you accidentally open the email, do not click any embedded links, as they may contain a virus or malware which will harm your computer," he added.
Earlier this year, the Crime Complaint Centre warned US citizens of a phishing scam which fraudulently claimed to be from the FBI and even used government images and letterheads to make the messages more compelling.
