Fake IRS phishing scam emerges
A phishing scam which purports to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is being circulated across the US, a local newspaper reports.
The Ledger Independent warns that some recipients could be falling for a scheme which allows the phisher to steal their identity and rob their bank account.
It states that the email claims the recipient is due a refund and encourages them to click a link which transports them to a fake IRS website.
Bonnie Heald, special agent in charge of the IRS Fraud Division, tells the newspaper: "We do not suggest recipients click on this, because it may also contain software that could infiltrate computer systems."
IRS advises that phishing emails may pretend to be from businesses and organisations the recipient deals with already, such as a bank or government agency.
Messages often request the recipient updates or confirms their information and directs them to a plausible but fake website, it explains.
