Fake Harry Potter film used in malware attack
A new malware attack, which claims to offer computer users the chance to watch the latest Harry Potter movie for free online, is circulating the web.
According to anti-virus software creator PC Tools, cybercriminals are using blog postings and search engine optimistation techniques to promote the fake film.
However, computer users clicking on links for the latest film are asked to download and install a viewer to allow them to watch the film.
Using video codec and streamer downloads as a means of infecting computers has been a common practice for cybercriminals for many years and the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince attack is just the latest to use the technique.
Recently, two new pieces of malware aimed at infecting Mac users' computers were discovered.
One of them, a variation on the Jahlav-C Trojan, encourages users to download an updated version of the Active Video codec to enable them to watch videos online. It was discovered on June 10th.
