Facebook wins case against spammer
Social networking site Facebook has won a case against a Canadian man who is said to have caused online security issues by sending millions of sexually explicit spam messages to members of the website.
The $873 million (£567 million) judgment against the man will however have to wait as the said cyber crook, Adam Guerbuez of Montreal, has been in hiding for the last four months since the case against him was introduced, reports the Associated Press.
However, Facebook, which has millions of dollars in annual turnover, may not be interested in the money, but the effect such a ruling would create - dissuading cyber crooks from spamming the network.
"Everyone who participates constructively in Facebook should feel confident that we are fighting hard to protect you against spam and other online nuisances," said Facebook's director of security Max Kelly.
The spammer reportedly used phishing to obtain the network's members' email addresses that he then spammed with ads for sexual enhancement products among others.
