Facebook users urged to check their credit report
Following reports that cyber criminals had targeted popular social networking site Facebook with a virus going by the name Koobface, an ID theft expert has stated that end users need to be more vigilant.
According to Experian's identity fraud protection and credit monitoring service CreditExpert.co.uk, social networking sites are increasingly attracting ID fraud cyber crooks.
The organisation says that higher earners aged from 26-45 are the most targeted on such sites and those concerned about ID theft should check their credit report.
"Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace are a magnet for identity thieves seeking innovative ways to source credit information from their potential victims," said director Darryl Bowman.
"In addition to skimming accounts, thieves can use this stolen credit information to set up new lines of credit, which take - on average - 18 months to spot."
The virus is said to be spreading across the network in the form of an add on, which downloads itself on users' computers if they attempt to click on a link attached.
