Facebook application 'linked to rogue sites'
Concerns over the online security of users of social networking site Facebook have been raised following the appearance of a new application that spread across the network over the weekend.
Going by the name "Error Check System", the application spread misleading messages to users and despite being considered harmless, it is feared that it may have been released to lead people to malicious websites.
According to the Unofficial Facebook blog, which highlighted the issue, the application claimed to have "faced some errors" while attempting to view users' profiles and asked for a response from account holders.
The website states that "the notifications are highly misleading and as expected highly viral" due to the fact that responding allowed the application to be applied.
Commenting, online security firm F-Secure said the timing of the application was "almost too much of a coincidence" as searching for the words "Error Check System" lead to "numerous links pointing to Rogue Antivirus scams".
