Experts warn of increase in threats ahead of Obama inauguration
Just days before Barack Obama takes the reins as the leader of the free world, an increase in spam, malware and phishing scams related to his presidential inauguration has been reported by internet security experts.
According to the US Computer Emergency Response Team (US-Cert), cyber crooks are already exploiting the high-profile event and internet users should stay vigilant to avoid being exposed to online threats.
The organisation says it has received reports of "an increased number of phishing sites and spam" related to the event and warned users to "remain cautious when receiving unsolicited email".
"US-CERT reminds users that phishing and spamming campaigns often coincide with highly publicised events," says the organisation, which recommends the installation of antivirus software.
The virus signatures of this online security software should be kept up to date, says the firm, which urges caution when visiting untrusted websites.
Barack Obama and John McCain's campaign for the White House last year generated a lot of interest worldwide, which cyber crooks tried to exploit.
