Expert warns of PowerPoint threat
An online security expert has warned internet users to be wary and vigilant of online threats emanating from Microsoft PowerPoint files.
Cyber crooks are actively exploiting a PowerPoint zero day vulnerability but computer giant Microsoft may not issue a patch for the internet security hole, based on a recent bulletin from the company.
According to online security expert Graham Cluley of Sophos, cyber criminals are deploying "booby-trapped PowerPoint files that, when opened on a victim's computer, run malicious code without authorisation".
"Once a PC has been infected by malware like a backdoor Trojan horse, hackers can gain access to the computer to steal information, to plant further malicious software, or to launch spam and denial-of-service attacks," he said.
Before a patch addressing the problem is issued, the security expert recommends taking advantage of the latest fixes provided by Microsoft, which is vital to prevent being exposed to online threats.
The next in-cycle patch is expected on the second Tuesday of next month, May 12th.
