EU children urged to remember online security
European youngsters are taking part in a variety of activities today designed to boost their awareness of online security as part of Safer Internet Day.
Research conducted by the EU Kids Online network discovered that many children and teenagers are offering personal information to strangers over the internet.
In the Czech Republic, for example, 91 per cent of online teens had given a stranger their email address, while 79 per cent had issued their photograph and 72 per cent had offered their telephone number.
Professor Sonia Livingstone, director of EU Kids Online, which is based at the London School of Economics and Political Science, said the internet presents young people with many opportunities but that many did not realise the implications of sharing information.
"As a result, our research has found substantial amounts of bullying, harassment and unwanted sexual messages, which is very distressing for some," she concluded.
Britain's Children's Charities' Coalition for Internet Safety has suggested in the past that the internet can be made considerably safer than it is.
It has called for greater internet awareness training to be made available to children and young people and more widely available filtering software to be offered to parents.
