Ethical hackers warn of the evolution of cyber attacks
A group of ethical hackers whose aim is to monitor how internet traffic routing behaviour in countries that enforce website blocking has now turned its focus to cyber attacks, reports Red Orbit.
According to the researchers, cyber attacks are increasingly turning from objects of mischief and crime to tools of war and now play larger roles in military strategy and political struggles.
Such attacks are especially dangerous to countries that have integrated web 2.0 into their core operations, such as finance and transport systems, they say.
A case in point is the recent cyber attacks noted when the Russia - Georgia conflict was taking place, which "in effect had the same effect that a military attack would have", according to expert Rafal Rohozinski.
The group, which is based at the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto boasts around 100 researchers across more than 70 countries, whose roles are mapping web traffic and testing access to sites in addition to their new mandate.
