'Essential' to make time for online security
Although taking care of a computer's online security can be an annoyance, it is also one of the most important things a user can do, an expert has warned.
Industry commentator Scott Klososky, writing for online blog Technology Story, made his comments after watching a line manager in an office become angry because she wanted her staff to be able to download any software they wanted.
He remarked that defending a computer's security from online threats is a "balancing act" but is essential.
"Security can be an annoyance, it also can be a critical barrier between us and the bad guys, malware and griefers that have nothing better to do than shatter our IT world," Mr Klososky continued.
It is particularly important to defend a machine from malware threats when it is connected to other computers as part of a network or stores email addresses of the owner's family and friends.
This is because a compromised PC will usually allow the virus to spread itself throughout a network of other computers and to email itself to stored acquaintances.
