England borough takes steps to secure public information
A borough in England has taken steps to beef up its online security and protect its data and consumer information on its online public services, it has emerged.
Worthing Borough Council has taken the measures as part of an overhaul of its connectivity and firewall infrastructure, according to Public Technology.net.
"In the last few years we've seen a sharp rise in the number of council services delivered via the web from council tax and housing benefit to a variety of leisure offerings," said ICT services manager Mark Gawley.
"Many of our staff are heavily reliant on Internet and email. So it's essential to have a resilient and secure environment to keep public services online and employees productive."
He went on to say that security was "paramount" especially since they were handling people's personal and financial information.
Wide Area Networking specialist, CI-Net has been contracted to take care of the installation and new measures, which include the set up of a centralised jointly managed firewall with round-the-clock intrusion monitoring.
