Employees 'new perimeter' against cyber crooks
Stamping out ignorance on the dangers caused by online threats by teaching employees the best online security practises is the "new perimeter" against cyber threats, an expert has stated.
In an Intel Premier IT Professional Webcast yesterday, Malcolm Harkins, general manager of information risk and security at Intel illustrated the point by highlighting how the company's employees reacted to a suspected phishing email.
"Our employees created a behavioural immune system response as a protection against that e-mail," he said.
"You can't block every piece of spam, but if your people are more attuned to what to look out for, they can be part of the perimeter."
According to Harkins, the company keeps its employees abreast with the how to behave online including on social networking websites such as Facebook in a bid to protect them as well as the company from cyber-criminals.
A recent report the Center for American Progress stated that not enough is being done to protect consumers from online threats.
