Email scam warning from the FBI
Consumers in the US should be aware of a new scam which involves criminals sending emails disguised as Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents.
The organisation has indicated that is does not send emails looking to elicit personal details fromUS citizens - a feature of the fraudulent activity.
Also included in the internet correspondence are misrepresentations of FBI director Robert Mueller III and other officials.
The emails, which claim to be from both domestic and overseas offices, come attached with malware and online auction scams.
In a statement, the FBI said: "The social engineering technique of utilizing the FBI's name is to intimidate and convince the recipient the e-mail is legitimate."
The Department of Public Service and Administration in South Africa has issued a similar warning this week.
It has alerted the nation's citizens to a hoax email, which says that the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority is offering training and work placements for 9,000 metro police officers each year. There is no such opportunity.
