Education 'the only security against online fraud'
The only way to protect British consumers from fraud when they are shopping online is to educate the consumer, an expert has asserted.
Mark Matthews, UK managing director of eWise Systems, a financial software firm, called for consumers to be taught how to protect themselves when shopping online.
"The only way to avoid fraud online is to educate the consumer ... In our experience of working with Egg and First Direct, the point of risk is at the consumer," he explained.
According to Apacs, the UK payments association, nearly 15 million people in Britain use the web regularly to conduct banking transactions and to shop.
While many are safe from the online threats of identity theft, some consumers fail to follow basic security measures, it noted.
Apacs found that one in eight shoppers fails to log out after shopping online, meaning others could access their financial details and one in four consumers fail to check if a website is secure.
