Education 'as effective' as ISP filtering
In the battle to protect children online, education is as effective as internet-filtering programs, an expert has asserted.
A report by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the country's communications watchdog, made its comments in a report on online security.
It stated that nationwide filtering of content could limit access to illegal content - such as images of abuse - but could not address all the security threats.
Communications minister Stephen Conroy told the resource News.com.au that a host of measures are necessary to combat online threats, particularly within sites containing chat-rooms and other interactive technologies.
"The government's cyber-safety plan presents a comprehensive range of measures that involves education, international co-operation, research, law enforcement and internet service provider (ISP) filtering," he explained.
Last year, the ACMA conducted research which revealed nine out of ten homes in which children live have access to the web and 76 per cent of those use broadband.
