E-crime unit arrests nine

Authorities in the UK have cracked down on a gang that used banking Trojans and other online security threats to carry out money laundering and arrested the culprits, it has emerged.

Computer Weekly reports that the new Police Central E-Crime Unit (PCeU) was behind the operation that resulted in the detaining of nine people, including four women and five men below the age of 30.

Servers in Europe were allegedly used by the gang - believed to be made up of Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union nationals - to infect computers with the malware, according to the PCeU.

Detective chief inspector Terry Wilson is quoted by the website as saying that the unit's composition of people from local boroughs and its specialist crime directorate contributed to the success of the operation.

"The expertise and knowledge-sharing with our stakeholders in the banking and financial industry has been combined with conventional policing to create a co-ordinated and sustained fast response to e-crime and the most up-to-date in computer forensics," he said.

PCeU was set up to combat e-crime in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
