Do not go online 'without malware protection'
It is vital that people never connect to the internet when their anti-virus software or firewall programme is closed, a publication has urged.
British online computer resource IT Week made its comments while discussing the best ways to create a DVD using an external writer.
It explained that sometimes the process fails because a computer is busy doing something else, suggesting users right-click on any icons listed as running in the task bar and close, quit or exit them to free up running time for the DVD-writing task.
However, such a move could leave computers vulnerable to malware attack, the publication noted.
"You should never close your anti-virus or firewall programme, unless you first disconnect the cable connecting your computer to the internet," it urged.
The website made its comments shortly after a report by Eurostat revealed one-quarter of European PCs have suffered virus attacks during the last 12 months - causing the loss of time and information.
