DHL tracking number scam exposed
The latest high-profile corporate image to be exploited by cyber crooks is parcel company DHL whose trusted name is being used by criminals to spread malware, it has emerged.
An online security expert has stated that the crooks are now sending out emails purporting to be from DHL, claiming that a parcel failed to be delivered because of a wrong address.
However, this email messages bearing the title "DHL Tracking number" come loaded with malware that can compromise the online security of those who respond, warns Graham Cluley of internet security firm Sophos.
"If you open the file inside the attachment called DHL_DOC.zip you will be infected by the Troj/Bckdr-QSL backdoor trojan horse, which will attempt to take control of your PC," he said.
"As always, be very very suspicious of unsolicited email attachments and make sure that your anti-virus software is properly updated," he added.
Cyber crooks routinely exploit trusted entities to throw internet users into a sense of false security, which can leave them exposed to attack.
