Details of 6m published online
The personal details of six million Chileans have been made available online after an attack on government files by hackers, it has been reported.
It has been reported that two popular websites carried the information for a number of hours after the cybercriminals published the information through them.
Chilean newspaper El Mercurio reports that the sensitive information made available included email addresses and telephone numbers, as well as details on individuals' social backgrounds, leaving them at risk of identity theft.
The hacker used the name Anonymous Coward and asserted that they had stolen the information to highlight the poor levels of protection sensitive data is afforded in Chile.
According to El Mercurio, the country's cybercrime brigade is investigating the incident.
Last year, it emerged that hackers had stolen sensitive information from 45.7 million credit and debit cards used through the retailer TJMax.
The attack was mainly carried out in the US and led to the firm's chairman Ben Cammarata pledging to improve security.
