Cybercrime 'threats people and business'
Cybercrime poses a "serious threat" to businesses, individuals and the government, the shadow home secretary has stated.
Speaking at the 2008 e-crime Congress, David Davis accused the Labour government of having failed to address issues such as malware, viruses and online threats such as identity theft.
He has launched a paper titled Tackling Cybercrime which suggests the country requires a specialised police unit to tackle the issue and a government minister responsible for the problem.
Mr Davis acknowledged that the public are aware of online threats from criminals.
"Many people do try and protect themselves from viruses on the internet. But this level of engagement is still insufficient. Vigilance itself is not enough," his report asserted.
The government-sponsored site Get Safe Online urged Britons to be vigilant when using the web and to protect themselves through cautious actions such as not responding to suspicious emails and fixing virus threats or spyware as soon as they are discovered.
