Cybercrime 'needs tougher punishments'
Cybercriminals should be taken more seriously and their actions more firmly punished, a US news source has stated.
Sci-Tech-Today.com made its comments following the news that the hacker responsible for launching attacks against sites such as CNN and eBay has been caught and is a 15-year-old boy from Montreal.
He had committed his cybercrimes because he was bored, it reported.
"For the private sector, for companies engaged in business over the internet, the increasing incidence of cyberattacks poses a threat to their bottom lines," the news provider asserted.
It suggested that teenagers have grown up with computers and become increasingly savvy as to how they can use the technology.
However, some lack the maturity to make good choices and a more serious federal punishment for such behaviour could help reinforce what is expected from internet users, Sci-Tech-Today.com added.
Americans should report cybercrime as they would any other illegal activity, the US Department for Justices urges.
Depending on the extent of the offence, they should take their complaint to local, state or federal law enforcement agencies.
