Cybercrime listed as national security threat
The British government has announced that it is more alert to new risks such as the online threat of cybercrime.
In the newly-published National Security Strategy, the country's leaders warn that the present-day risks threatening people and the economy are more diverse than in the past.
Such threats include the risk or terrorism, failing states and cybercrime, the report notes.
It states that work will be undertaken among both public and private sector bodies to ensure the government's systems remain safe from such online threats.
The report claims the government is committed to further maximising the opportunities presented by the internet.
However, it pledges it is also committed to "reducing the scope for terrorists and criminals to exploit those opportunities and freedoms and ensuring that the internet itself is resilient enough to withstand attacks and accidents".
Earlier this month, shadow home secretary David Davis declared that cybercrime presents a "serious threat" to people, businesses and government departments.
