Cyber threats vary over holiday periods
A leading software security company has released figures highlighting malicious activity during the traditional European holiday season.
According to research from VASCO Data Security International conducted in July, different types of viruses were active during the summer as spammers seemed to have been on holiday too.
Internet surfing increased during this period but a slight decrease in spyware and slight increase in phishing attempts was noted.
Less vigilance due to reduced staffing of IT departments during the holiday season could be contributing to the increased presence of viruses, the company said.
Commenting in the findings, Jan Valcke, president and COO of VASCO Data Security said: "Surveys such as these clearly indicate that all companies, including SMEs, are vulnerable for internet fraud.
"Holiday periods can be potentially dangerous considering certain companies are less vigilant. We could not stress more the importance of automated solutions which ensure companies have the same level of vigilance throughout the year."
