Cyber security needs international cooperation
International cooperation is needed to counter the ever increasing cyber crime that results in millions having their internet security compromised and their information exposed to online threats, it has been stated.
This year has so far seen potent botnets rise significantly, malware multiply and more than nine million people in the US become victims of phishing as spam levels rose to record levels.
As a result, cyber security has been thrown into the limelight and has resulted in a new report out this week by the Center for Strategic & International Studies, which urges it to be put on par with weapons of mass destruction.
"It's great that cybersecurity is now getting such mainstream attention and it will be interesting to see what comes out of this report," said David Poellhuber, president of North America-based ZEROSPAM.
"But the fight against cyber criminality will be lost until there is real international cooperation on this matter. Let's hope that this attention will eventually lead to that."
More than 95 per cent of all email today is spam, which amounts to some 100 billion spam messages per day.
