Cyber crooks to target Grand National
The Grand National horse race takes place this weekend and as thousands of punters turn their attention to the event, so to will cyber crooks, an online security expert has warned.
Horse racing websites are set to be hit by cyber crooks out to make a quick buck from the event, according to the Threat Research team of internet security firm Webroot.
Malware authors are said to be working on variants of online threats with which to cause their havoc, a move they routinely adopt in order to bypass internet security measures.
According to Nick Banks, a managing director at Webroot's consumer business unit, nearly half of keylogges identified by the firm since January 2008 have already been updated.
"Hackers churn out updates or new variants to get past detection at the desktop, so that they can continue to harvest personal information unchallenged," he stated.
Cyber crooks routinely hit high-profile events such as this. Last year the Olympic Games and even the US presidential election were exploited by crooks.
