Cyber crooks target school websites with pornography

The internet security of websites belonging to around 20 primary schools in England has been affected by cyber crooks that have created replica pages of the platforms with lewd images, it has been reported.

Moodle, a free virtual learning service used by the schools is said to have been used to create the pages with pornographic images, according to the Times Educational Supplement (TES).

While children cannot see the images while at schools due to firewalls and other online security measures, it is feared that they may stumble upon the pages while trying to access their schools' websites from home.

According to the creator of Moodle, which helps students and teachers to communicate with each other worldwide, old versions of the package could have been exploited to create the websites.

"Schools often don't have very good IT support and neglect this kind of vital maintenance, even though we try to notify them," said company founder Martin Dougiamas.
