Cyber crooks increasingly warming up to Macs
Mac users gained more attention from cyber crooks in 2008, who launched new malware and Trojans to cause online security issues for the computers, which are increasingly expanding their market presence.
An annual report from internet security firm Intego examining the threats that emerged during the year states that 2008 had everything from scareware to browser flaws and Mac OS X vulnerabilities to worry users.
The RSPlug trojan horse caused more misery to Mac users by appearing in various variants that seemed to baffle and confuse some security experts, says the firm.
A hacker tool that could be used to create malware that would have allegedly opened a backdoor to hackers was found not to be as dangerous as it required crooks to already have access to a machine to infect it.
The year also saw some scareware such as the Macsweeper, which was designed to trick Mac users into buying bogus software that could allegedly clean their machines.
Last month Apple encouraged Mac users to install anti-virus software due to increasing attention from cyber crooks.
