Cyber crooks exploiting hottest topics to lure victims
Cyber crooks are never short of ideas and are now reported to be using Google Trends to find out the hottest topics and setting up relevant blogs riddled with malware to lure internet users, an online security expert has claimed.
The hackers are finding out the hottest topics and responding to them with relevant key words that are designed to improve their Google search engine rankings, according to Webroot.
"For the first time, hackers are capitalising on the top news stories from Google Trends Labs, which lists the day's most frequently searched topics," says director of threat research Paul Piccard.
"The fact that these hackers are now manipulating Google's methods for relevance to increase the ranking of these sites is new and greatly increases the number of people exposed to this threat," adds senior vice president Paul Lipman.
Internet security experts recommend having all the proper regularly updated security software installed to avoid being exposed to online threats.
