Cyber crooks exploiting downturn with scams
Internet users have been warned to avoid falling victim to the current turmoil in the financial markets by allowing cyber crooks to deceive them with phishing scams.
According to online security specialist Goodmail Systems, fraudulent email scams and "phishing" attacks related to the current crisis are doing rounds in cyber space.
"Email scammers like to use global crises and high profile news headlines when baiting consumers," said Peter Horan, chief executive officer of Goodmail.
"In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, millions of Americans received fake emails claiming to be from charitable organisations soliciting donations. Phishers know how to make use of people's vulnerabilities during times of stress."
According to Goodmail, cyber crooks are experts at visually mimicking brands' identities and users should contact their banks or related organisations - on phone - if they suspect an email.
In addition users should be sceptical of requests for personal information and avoid clicking any links from unsolicited messages.
According to Sophos, internet users should ensure they have regularly updated online security programmes.
