Cyber crooks are drawn to popular platforms
Cyber crooks are drawn to social networking site Facebook because of its popularity, which attracts thousands of people making it worth attacking, it has been stated.
The abundance of users with accounts on the networking site presents a lucrative platform for hackers to search for victims to expose to online threats, according to internet security consultant Carole Theriault.
"Facebook is one of those companies that has just skyrocketed in importance and everyone loves it," says the Sophos online security expert who is quick to point out that "spammers and hackers basically follow the trend".
"So it is not surprising at all that they are attacking Facebook and using Facebook to send out spam," she added.
Internet users are advised to counter these attacks by setting their configuration options to ward off the threats.
