Cyber crime fighters focus on pornography
Internet con artists, hackers and child pornographers have been put on notice following the launch of an International Cybercrime Research Centre aimed at snuffing them out.
The new online threat-fighting initiative is to be based at the Simon Fraser University in Canada, where it will focus on targeting child pornography and online privacy issues using some form of "good virus".
The centre's new director, Robert Gordon, said: "In the same way that a bad virus works by infecting machines, by hunting for certain symbols, so a good virus can operate in much the same way."
The research centre will also delve into identity theft, considered to be the most serious of cyber crimes, as well as online criminal harassment, money laundering and viruses, according to the Canadian Press.
The centre will also try to pursue ways of ensuring country borders are not a hindrance to busting online criminals by pushing for international agreements around investigations.
