Consumers warned of new banking trojans
Internet users are being warned of increasing online threats posed by new banking trojan programmes that operate in a different way to traditional phishingonline security threats.
The malware does not need any action from victims to launch into attacks but lies in wait in the background waiting for an opportunity to strike, reports USA Today.
While traditional phishing scams operate by throwing up fake websites, this new type of trojan waits invisible in the hard drive for the opportune moment to have a go at user' online banking accounts.
The newspaper quotes Patrik Runald, an internet security specialist at F-Secure as saying phishing "doesn't work as well as it used to".
"Banking trojans provide a very effective and direct means for the bad guys to get their hands on the money," he states.
Infection can come in a variety of ways including clicking on viral links or visiting infected websites, the newspaper reports.
Last week identity protection and verification organisation RSA revealed data showing that the biggest amount of phishing attacks worldwide are directed at the UK.
