Consumers unwilling to change old habits
New research from Gartner has revealed that many consumers would rather sacrifice their online security than adapt or change to better internet security practices.
In spite of awareness about the dangers posed by online threats and weak passwords, many consumers in the US are unwilling to sacrifice their convenience to improve their security.
Many rely on their service providers for security and some do not even want to change their password habits.
Commenting, Gregg Kreizman, the research director at Gartner, said:"Two-thirds of US consumers surveyed use the same one or two passwords for all websites they access that require authentication.
"They don't favour using software or hardware to help manage passwords and user-centric identity frameworks such as OpenID and information card architectures face scarce consumer demand."
Password security is vital as was highlighted by a recent hacking case involving micro-blogging site Twitter.
An employee's account was easily cracked using a dictionary guesser that led to the accounts of high profile Twitter users such as Barack Obama being affected.
