Consumers given tips on preventing ID theft
Following a recent spate of ID theft related fraud and news that customers' bank details were found on a computer on eBay, Fairinvestment.co.uk has come up with tips to prevent ID theft.
Among the tips are keeping all Pin numbers and online passwords hidden, even from trusted people and not opening unsolicited emails as they may contain viruses and other online threats, such as phishing scams.
Only shop online on websites bearing a padlock symbol and addresses that start with https:/ as well as using a credit card instead of a debit card as credit cards offer insurance, the organisation says.
More importantly, consumers are advised to make sure their computers are protected with relevant anti-virus and firewalls to keep out hackers.
Credit cards spokesperson, Matt Edwards says: "More than 100,000 people fall victim to identity fraud each year, and as technology advances, so too are techniques.
"Identity fraudsters are incredibly inventive and are constantly finding new ways to rip you off, so it is well worth doing all you can to protect your personal details."
