Consumer phishing threats increase
Consumers are being threatened by an increasing number of phishing scams, many of which are very sophisticated, a publication has warned.
US news resource the Chatham Journal Weekly has warned citizens to be wary of the information they release online, particularly in response to an emailed request.
It highlighted advice from the Anti-Phishing Working Group, which includes a recommendation that people be suspicious of unsolicited emails which request personal financial information.
The newspaper added: "While online banking and e-commerce is very safe, as a general rule you should be careful about giving out your personal financial information over the internet."
Earlier today, Ohio State University's student website the Lantern warned that the faculty has been plagued by a sudden surge of phishing emails.
It adds that the messages request users' student usernames and passwords for "verification purposes", leading to 50 webmail accounts being hacked and used to send mass levels of spam.
