Conficker worm 'spreading far and wide'
An internet security expert has warned that the conficker/downadup worm, which has been in the media limelight in the recent past, is still posing an online security problem and infecting machines.
The malicious software is infecting 50,000 new computers every day, according to the Symantec threat intelligence team, which has said that the US, Brazil and India are topping the list of infections.
In a blog posting, the online security vendor said: "Much of the media hype seems to have died down around Conficker/Downadup, but it is still out there spreading far and wide."
Among those being infected are major global organisations, with computers in Fortune 1,000 companies being in the midst of the malware spread.
Rick Wesson, the chief executive officer of Support Intelligence and a member of the Conficker Working Group is quoted by techworld.com as saying this development poses a problem for many organisations.
"It's really hard and really expensive and if the Fortune companies can't stop it, how can you expect small businesses to do it?" he posed.
