Commonwealth Bank warns customers to watch out for phishing emails
Australia's Commonwealth Bank has warned customers to watch out for phishing emails circulating both locally and globally and advised them to protect their personal and banking account details.
The bank's group executive in charge of retail banking service Ross McEwan has revealed that three such emails purporting to be from the institution have been doing the rounds and three new ones have been spotted this week.
"Hundreds of recipients of these emails have been contacting the bank seeking clarification about their validity," he stated.
"While many people delete these emails, some may be unsuspecting victims of these scams," he said, adding that the bank does not get in touch with customers via email seeking personal information.
Mr McEwan, however, praised consumers for contacting the bank, saying it illustrates the fact that Australians are cautious about receiving emails purporting to be from banks.
Details stolen through such phishing scams, which routinely offer deals that are too good to be true and sometimes have poor grammar, can lead to ID theft and online fraud.
