College email accounts targeted by phishers
Students at the University of Southern California (USC) have been hit by phishing scammers purporting to be from the college's IT team.
The scam email was received today in several USC accounts and threatens that unless personal details are provided the holder's account will be permanently deleted within a week, laist.com reports.
The scammers requested that account holders confirm their email address and that they also provide their password, date of birth and location, which would enable them to hack into accounts.
A statement issued by the representatives of USC today indicated that the mail was not authentic and that it had been sent from a non-USC address.
Students who were taken in by the scam and submitted their information have been advised to change their passwords immediately and were reminded that the provider would not request personal information from a non-USC address.
