Chinese hackers sentenced for larceny
A collection of hackers who used malware to steal funds from internet bank accounts have been ordered to serve hefty prison sentences by a Chinese court.
Shanghai's Intermediate People's court has sentenced Zhang Wei, Yu Li and Chen Feng to serve between six and half and eight years in prison for theft, with a further man Zhao Gang sent down for 30 months for his part in concealing the funds raised.
According to British newspaper the Inquirer, the Chinese National People's Congress has requested a clampdown on hackers in order to protect businesses from the security and financial implications of such misdemeanours.
Earlier this month, the shadow home secretary David Davis warned that electronic crime perpetrated against British firms can be considered a serious threat against people, businesses and the government.
He called for a police national cybercrime unit to be created and a single government minister to be made responsible for the online threat.
