Chinese hackers linked to US blackouts
The potential for hackers to undertake malicious activities has been highlighted by recent links suggested with US power cuts.
According to a new report in the National Journal, those developing malware such as viruses have managed to gain access to the information systems of a wide variety of US companies and government institutions.
Tim Bennett, ex-president of the Cyber Security Industry Alliance, has told the publication that Chinese hackers had been identified by intelligence officials as the root cause of power outages in the north-east of the US.
Meanwhile, consumers worried about online security of their own information have been advised to look into installing appropriate anti virus software.
Agence France Presse reports on comment from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, which has recommended such software as the best way of combating those seeking to integrate malware on to users' computers.
